Coláiste Chiaráin Leading the Way for STEM Student Experience

Pictured at the launch of the GE Additive Education Program were STEM coordinator in Coláiste Chiaráin, Mr. Conor Power, Mr. Patrick Byrnes, Croom Precision and Mr. Steven Wilcox, Sales Director, UK & Ireland GE Additive along with Coláiste Chiaráin staff and students.

Coláiste Chiaráin are delighted this week to partner with Croom Precision and GE as part of the Additive Education Program. As part of this programme the school has received a 3D Printer to further enhance STEM provision in the school.

Croom Precision’s research and development activities which is being headed up by Patrick Byrnes, a past pupil of Coláiste Chiaráin, has seen rapid demand in the specialised field of metallic and polymer additive manufacturing (3D Printing) over the past 2 years in international medical and aerospace markets. GE Additive has made a significant financial commitment over five years to invest in educational programs to deliver polymer 3D printers to primary and secondary schools and metal 3D printers to colleges and universities around the world.

Principal of Coláiste Chiaráin, Mr. Gerard O’Sullivan stated that Coláiste Chiaráin are delighted to partner with Croom Precision and GE in this innovative project. As part of the Junior Cycle programme, all students in Coláiste Chiaráin study STEM as a 3 year short course. “Using CAD design, and 3D printing skills, this curriculum encourages students to approach a problem in a systematic way. They start by identifying a need, visualizing solutions, and generating ideas. They send their creations to the printer and then evaluate and improve their designs. They are actively collaborating, problem solving, and overcoming obstacles as they follow the steps of the engineering design process. This is what STEM is all about.”

Coláiste Chiaráin has a very progressive approach towards educational developments and innovation and look forward to opening a STEM suite in their new campus opening in Spring 2020.
