Martyna Skorecka – Gold Young Economist Award

Coláiste Chiaráin has continued its successful run of competing at the highest level, with the winning of two national Business awards in recent weeks.  Coláiste Chiaráin students have recently scored Gold in Young Economist of the Year and 1st place award in National Student Enterprise Awards.

5th year students, Eimear Hickey and Martyna Skorecka, have been awarded a gold medal in The Young Economist of the Year Awards for their project “The Correlation between Airline Traffic and Balanced Regional Development”. The project investigates the relationship between economic growth in the Midwest region and airline traffic into and out of Shannon Airport.

The Young Economist of the Year is a national competition held annually for the promotion and understanding of economics for second-level students. Now in its 7th year, the competition continues to grow and attract entries from schools all over the country with close to 1,000 entries this year.

As well as being gold medal winners, Eimear and Martyna were also shortlisted for further awards from the PDST, the Irish Central Bank, and the Irish Government Economic and Evaluation Service (IGEES). Here they went on to pick up a bronze medal in the PDST/IEA Senior Category to add to their gold medal award.

Eimear and Martyna’s achievement continues Coláiste Chiaráin’s recent run of success in the Young Economist of the Year competition. This is the third year in a row that the school has achieved a gold medal award and follows the success of past pupils Diana Mirza and Diane Sheehy over the past two years. Diana and Diane went on the represent Coláiste Chiaráin and Ireland at the International Economics Olympiad held in St. Petersburg in Russia in July 2019 where their project was awarded a bronze medal.

Coláiste Chiaráin’s Alex Healy Passas has also picked up a top award in the National Student Enterprise Programme. A 3rd Year student, Alex took the 1st place award for Best Commercial Potential in the Intermediate Category for his project ‘Comestibles’, where he has produced edible plates and cutlery that will help the environment with the reduction of single use plastics. Alex had previously won 1st Prize in the Limerick Regional Enterprise Awards.

The Student Enterprise Programme, an initiative run by the Network of Local Enterprise Offices of Ireland, is Ireland’s largest and most successful student enterprise programme with over 26,000 second level students taking part each year. Students from 1st year to 6th year get to set up and run their own business and find out what it’s really like to be an entrepreneur by taking part in this 8 month long enterprise education learning programme.

The Principal of Coláiste Chiaráin, Mr. Gerard O’Sullivan, paid tribute to Eimear, Martyna and Alex on their fantastic success. Speaking about the wins, Mr. O’Sullivan congratulated the students on their commitment and wonderful entrepreneurship, while also acknowledging their mentors in the school Business department, Mr. Martin Murphy and Mr. Tadhg Bennett, for their continuous encouragement and support of their students in competing at this level. We are fortunate to have had huge success in these competitions in recent years and this is testament to the work and commitment of our staff and students alike.
