Tree Planting

Following on from the school’s orchard initiative which saw the planting of 50 fruit trees. The week before christmas saw the planting of a double row screening hedge around the water station at the far corner of the school. The screening hedge is composed of  seven native Irish species which include; White Thorn, Hazel, Holly, Common Birch, Silver Birch, Common Alder and Beech. This screening hegde is phase one of the school’s Biodiversity Forest planting project which will comprise over 3,000 native Irish trees being planted on the school grounds over the coming months and years. The project will support teaching and learning alongside wellbeing while also contributing to the promotion of biodiversity and offsetting the carbon footprint of our new school. The planting of these trees will also contribute to the https://www.easytreesie.com/ initiative to plant one million trees in Ireland by 2024.

This project has been made possible through our work in collaboration with Brendan Fitzsimons of the Tree Council of Ireland and Pat Peters from Caoilte Nurseries who have supported this project from its inception. Phase two of this project will commence early in the New Year.  Well done to all concerned.
