National Tree Week 2023
This week, Coláiste Chiaráin were delighted to engage in and celebrate another National Tree Week in collaboration with our biodiversity project planting partners, Coillte, The National Tree Council of Ireland and Easy Treesie / Crann.
This year’s programme of events kicked off with presentations from Principal Mr. Gerard O’Sullivan, Brendan Fitzsimons, CEO of the Tree Council of Ireland and Orla Farrell from Easy Treesie to an eager group of American exchange students from Spring-Ford, Pennsylvania, their Irish counterparts and the Coláiste Chiaráin Green Schools Committee. The presentation provided an overview of the Coláiste Chiaráin biodiversity project which has been ongoing over a number of years. The presenters explained how the project has progressed and grown to now comprise of nearly 3,500 trees planted and the creation of a biodiversity walkway which comes together to create the Coláiste Chiarain biodiversity park. This project is also part of and contributes to the The Easy Treesie national project to get school children to plant a million trees on the Island of Ireland.
The planting for this year’s Tree Week consisted of the planting of 100 Nordic Maple trees which were supplied by Coillte and the planting of a Morello Cherry tree, gifted by Easy Treesie, in the school orchard.
Principal Mr O’Sullivan said “This is a wonderful project which will only increase in its value to our school community as time goes by. This particular project is an added amenity which enhances the surroundings of our campus while at the same time also helps to offset the carbon footprint of our state of the art new school building. Staff and students have been involved in the planting process in collaboration with our planting partners from Coillte, The Tree Council of Ireland and Easy Treesie/Crann. I would also like to thank our other partners who made this project possible, Limerick Central Rotary Club, Ger Lynch from Tallybrooke Engeneering, Liam Lynch from Lynches Quarries, Richard O’Donoghue and everyone who has contributed to this project. It was wonderful to have our American exchange studnets and teachers on site for Tree Week 2023 as they assisted in the planting of 100 maple trees.”
Happy National Tree Week from all at Coláiste Chiaráin!
